Bezoar Goat Watching in Armenia

Set out into the high, rugged country of Vayots Dzor in search of one of the Caucasus's most impressive wild animals: the Bezoar goat, ancestor of the domestic goat and famous for the males' great scimitar-curved horns. Listed in the Red Book of endangered species, it survives on cliffs and crags where few people ever go — which is exactly where this experience takes you.

You will travel from Yerevan into a protected mountain reserve with an experienced ranger who knows the terrain and the animals' habits intimately.

The watching itself is the real thing, not a staged encounter: you will scan cliff faces with binoculars (provided), move quietly along light hiking trails, and wait for the moment a herd appears against the skyline. Sightings depend on nature's cooperation — and that uncertainty is precisely what makes a successful spotting unforgettable. Golden eagles, vultures, and other mountain wildlife often make appearances along the way.

The experience runs April to October, lasts about seven hours from Yerevan and back, and involves easy-to-moderate walking — comfortable shoes and a camera with zoom are the essentials.
