Tour Description
This experience offers a rare opportunity to step inside the workshop of a traditional Armenian stone-carver and engage directly with one of the country's most iconic art forms: the khachkar, or cross-stone. The day begins with a warm welcome and an introduction to the history, symbolism, and spiritual significance of these intricately carved monuments, each of which tells a story through its patterns and motifs.
Spend the day in the workshop of a skilled Armenian stone-carver, discovering the intricate symbolism behind khachkars (cross-stones), one of the country's most iconic cultural expressions. After an introduction to their history and meaning, you will observe the master at work before being guided through your own hands-on carving experience. Using traditional tools and techniques, you will create simple motifs while gaining insight into a craft that is both deeply spiritual and artistically demanding. The experience offers a rare opportunity to engage directly with a UNESCO-recognised tradition and the people who preserve it.
By the end of the experience, you leave not only with a deeper appreciation of the craft, but also with a meaningful connection to a UNESCO-recognised heritage practice that has been passed down through generations.
