Khachkar Carving Workshop in Armenia

The khachkar — Armenia's carved cross-stone — is one of the world's most distinctive art forms: thousands of stone monuments, no two ever alike, recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This hands-on experience takes you into the workshop of a master carver in Gyumri or Vanadzor, where you will discover the techniques, symbolism, and patience behind this ancient art.

The visit opens with a warm welcome and an introduction to what khachkars actually say: how their lace-like patterns encode eternity, protection, faith, and memory, and why families have commissioned them for over a thousand years — as memorials, as thanksgiving, as prayers in stone.

You will then watch the master at work — the confident strikes, the patience, the way a rigid block of tuff slowly turns to stone embroidery — before taking up the traditional tools yourself. Guided closely, you will carve simple motifs into your own piece of stone, discovering first-hand both the difficulty and the meditative rhythm of the craft. To mark the memory, you will get to have your art as a keepsake.
