Tour Description
Clay has been worked in the Armenian highlands for thousands of years — from Urartian storage jars taller than a person to the salt-glazed vessels still found in village kitchens. In this hands-on workshop in a Yerevan artisan's studio, you will join that long line of makers and shape your own piece of it.
After an introduction to the tradition and its techniques, you will start creating: forming your ceramic piece by hand or on the potter's wheel, with the artisan guiding your hands at every step. There is a particular, universal joy in feeling a shapeless lump become a bowl or cup under your fingers — no prior experience needed, and every skill level leaves with something real.
Then comes the decoration, where the piece becomes unmistakably Armenian. Using patterns drawn from centuries of national heritage — pomegranates, eternity wheels, geometric borders, motifs of protection and nature — you will paint and embellish your work while the artisan explains what each symbol has meant across architecture, carpets, and daily objects. Your piece gains not just beauty but a story you can retell.
The workshop is as reflective as it is creative: four unhurried hours of making something with your hands, a welcome change of pace between sightseeing days. Materials and instruction are included; wear comfortable clothes that can meet a little clay. As the finished pieces require firing, they cannot be taken home on the same day. After the firing process, the creations can be shipped to guests upon request; shipping costs are not included and will be arranged separately.
You will leave with more than a handmade ceramic keepsake — you’ll take home the rare kind of souvenir that carries your own story and creativity. The experience offers a deeper appreciation of a craft that has been woven into Armenian culture and traditions for generations. Ideal for families, couples, and creative travellers, this workshop can be enjoyed year-round.
